The Last Arrow of Nefertiti - Print Options

"When you set in western lightland, Earth is in darkness as if in death."
— Great Hymn to the Aten, attributed to Akhenaten (tr. Miriam Lichtheim)
Akhenaten composed those lines in the court his wife Nefertiti ruled beside him — a hymn to a sun that gave Egypt everything and then, every evening, took it back. This image reframes that same hinge of light and dark as a single loosed arrow. A gilded figure, crowned in a silhouette that echoes Nefertiti's own unmistakable bust, draws her bow to full extension in a desert canyon at dusk, the last shot before the light itself goes out. Her skin holds the same warm, dying gold as the rock around her, so figure and landscape read as one continuous surface catching the day's final rays. The bow's taut curve, the arrow's fixed line, the crown's hard geometry against a bare and darkening sky — every element in the frame is drawn tight toward a single point of release, the way the hymn's own sun draws every living thing toward its setting. What follows the shot, like what follows sunset, is left off camera.
