Long before elves entered the vocabulary of Greek myth, the mountains already had their own guardians — the Oreads, nymphs of rock and altitude, and Pan, who kept to caves and high pastures where his pipe-music startled travelers into the word "panic." Greece's mountain caves were treated as sanctuaries rather than simple shelter: places where the wild kept its own authority and mortals entered carefully, if at all. This image was made inside one of those cave systems, where daylight only reaches a few meters past the entrance before the rock takes over completely. The figure sits at that boundary, half in the last available light, half already claimed by the dark interior — neither fully seen nor fully hidden, which is exactly how the old stories describe encountering something that belongs to the mountain rather than to us.
